Warning: This isnât a feel good holiday family story.
According to a police report from the Marion County Sheriffâs Office, a woman with a baby in her arms was walking in the middle of traffic early Monday near Ocala, in Central Florida. Witnesses had reported seeing the woman on the highway âbarking like a dogâ and grunting at passing cars.
VIdeo released by the sheriffâs office shows deputies on foot attempted to make contact with the woman, identified as Kayla Morgan, but she continued to zig-zag around vehicles while carrying the boy like âa jacket draped over her right arm, allowing the victim to flail.â
A deputy tried to calm Morgan down by saying, âCome here! We want to figure out whatâs going on with you! Youâre not in trouble!â
You see the suspect run off to the side of the road and throw the baby down like trash.
According to the arrest report, Morgan âdeliberately dropped the victim head firstâ on the side of the road. Officers retrieve the baby, who is crying hysterically.
âDude, youâre not in trouble!â said the deputy, out of breath, trying again to get her to stop.
Then when the woman still wouldnât stop, the suspect was warned that she would be Tased, and eventually was â twice â in the ribs.
âGet on the ground now!â screams the deputy.
The woman was reportedly incoherent once in the back of the patrol car, making âabnormalâ noises.
When asked what her name was, Morgan replied âB—ch,â according to the police report.
She was taken to a local hospital. A few hours later, when âlucid,â Morgan later admitted to investigators she had been taking the club drug âMollyâ and methamphetamine for the last three days. She barely remembered the incident, saying she thought she was running from âmonstersâ and the officer was âgoing to suck her blood.â
The suspect had no recollection of dropping the infant, who suffered a fractured skull in the fall. According to WFTV, the baby is about six weeks old.
The 23-year-old woman is being held without bail at the Marion County Jail on charges of aggravated child abuse and resisting an officer without violence. Her relationship with the baby is not specified in the arrest report.
The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating the incident. It is unclear who currently has custody of the child.
