STAR puppy classes will be offered at 11:15 a.m. beginning today at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center, 1700 Whiskey Road. The class will meet on Wednesdays for six weeks. Puppies will learn commands and those who qualify will be eligible for the AKC STAR award at the end of the course. Puppies must be between 10 to 20 weeks old and have two sets of shots. Basic Dog Training classes will be held at 10 a.m. beginning today at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center, 1700 Whiskey Road. The class will meet on Wednesdays for six weeks. Dogs will learn basic commands including come, sit, down, stay, wait, stand, etc., and topics will include basic dog care and what to expect from training. Dogs must be 5 months and older, have a current rabies vaccination and be registered with the city if the owner lives within the city limits. Mended Hearts Chapter No. 294 will meet at 10 a.m. in the Miller Nursing Building on the campus of USC Aiken, 471 University Parkway. Ginger Hudock will be the guest speaker. Her topic will be nutrition.

SATURDAY 

Aiken County Parks, Recreation and Tourism will partner with Valley Fair Baptist Church, Serenity Charity Club, and Horsecreek Masonic District to host its Annual School Supply Giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 11, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Aiken County Recreation Center. A Back 2 School Bash will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Churches Together for Kids Office, 231 Main St. S., Wagener. The first 500 students will receive sports tote bags.

A Back2School Giveaway will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church, 425 Hampton Ave. N.W. The event, sponsored by the Free Riders Motorcycle Club, will provide students with book bags and school supplies. The event also will feature free food, games, prizes and music.

A dog wash will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare, 199 Willow Run Road. The cost is $20 for a bath or $30 for bath with nail trim/ear cleaning for dogs 30 pounds or less; $25 for a bath or $35 for bath with nail trim/ear cleaning; and $30 for a bath or $40 for a bath with nail trim/ear cleaning for dogs 60 pounds or more.
