Service dog named for Georgia attorney

– She helped people through her role as a lawyer with the Georgia Attorney General’s Office and now that spirit of service will continue with a dog named in her honor.

Friday members of the AG’s Office met a three-month-old puppy named for former Senior Assistant Attorney General Michelle Hirsch, who passed away in January.

“She’ll help others, just like Michelle Hirsch the attorney did,” said Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Chris McKeown.

Agent McKeown partnered with Canine Assistants to name a dog after Hirsch after he learned about her death.  Hirsch had defended McKeown in a federal lawsuit and had a love for animals.

Michelle will go through a year and a half to two years of training to become a service dog.

The Attorney General’s Office named a conference room for Hirsch and McKeown plans to use that space to keep people updated on the dog’s progress.

“My intent is for us to be able to post pictures of Michelle’s development as she grows and as she goes through training and eventually as she gets assigned to a recipient,” said Agent McKeown.

According to Canine Assistants, Michelle will likely go to someone who suffers from seizures.

“She is missed.  She was a big part of the department, but her legacy now continues with puppy Michelle,” said Attorney General Chris Carr.
