Parma firefighters save man, and his best friend, during morning blaze

PARMA, OH (WOIO) –

A family is lucky to be alive after a fire ripped through their house.

Smoke and flames shot from their Parma house early Saturday morning.

Dee Nemeth lives across the street and woke up to girls screaming.

“The little girl told me her step-daddy was trapped. That broke my heart,” Nemeth said.

All the kids, and mom had gotten out, but the dad was still in the basement.

Firefighters were able to rush in and rescue him.

Then they went back inside the house for the family’s three dogs.

“One was unconscious, and they gave it CPR and oxygen, and brought it back,” Nemeth said.

“A quick round of CPR was done on the dog and oxygen was provided for the dog, and lo and behold, the dog started to revive,” said T.J. Martin with the Parma Fire Department. “We were trained on how to do CPR on dogs because our chief likes us to be trained in all techniques for all members of the family, including our fur-babies.”

Martin said in the past year they have done additional training on canine CPR not only for pets, but for the police canines as well.

They were also just given animal bag masks from Invisible Fence Brand of Cleveland.

“That dog, that member of their family can provide comfort to them. That is very gratifying,” Martin said.

Nemeth said she’s relieved everyone, including all the pets, made it out alive.

“Once the living stuff is out, the rest can be replaced,” Nemeth said.

Several departments in Northeast Ohio have the bag masks for canines, but not many had done the additional training for CPR on dogs like Parma had.

This was actually the second time in the past month Parma has used the mask and saved a dog.
