TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) – A midtown family and their dog was attacked by another dog this weekend while taking a walk in their neighborhood.
They’re using the scary experience as a way to warn parents to always stay alert and for pet owners to keep their dogs on a leash.
The mom whose husband and dog were attacked, said her husband had to get stitches in his hands and their dog got staples in her leg.
The family took their dog on a walk Saturday.
She said they saw a little girl who was maybe 3 or 4-years-old holding a pit bull on a leash.
Moments later, the mom said the dog started sprinting full speed, attacking her dog and eventually biting her husband.
“It should be taken seriously,” said Katie Merill who lives near where the attack happened. “It’s a great reminder for people with pets to be more aware and to be more cautious.”
Merrill has lived at the Patrick Henry Neighborhood for six years.
While she’s shocked this happened, she hopes it’s a wake up call to pet owners.
“I’m probably more likely to say something to someone that may have their pet off the leash,” said Merill.
While it won’t stop her and her 3-year-old daughter from enjoying the park, she’ll be more aware now.
“It can be scary when you have young kids and a dog approaches you,” said Merill.
Tulsa Animal Welfare has been in contact with the owners of the dog who attacked the family.
They said the dog will have to go in quarantine for 10 days to make sure it doesn’t have rabies, then they will go from there.
