Mets said to be ‘aggressive’ on potential Robinson Cano trade – SNY.tv

The Mets are holding their cards extremely close on the possibility of trading for Seattle second baseman Robinson Cano, declining to answer inquiries about the topic. But a rival executive in touch with the team says they are being “aggressive” on Cano, and hoping the Mariners sweeten their offer.

The Yankees, too, are worth watching on Cano. Although talks centered around Jacoby Ellsbury fizzled — as reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal — the Yanks haven’t ruled out revisiting the subject.

As for the Mets, the idea is to capitalize on Seattle’s own aggressive posture in trying to unload Cano. At 36 years old, owed $120 million over the next five seasons, and coming off a PED suspension, Cano carries significant baggage. But he remains a productive hitter.

Could the Mets use this deal to rid themselves of Jay Bruce’s contract, and acquire young closer Edwin Diaz? How much would the Mariners pay of Cano’s contract?

These huge unknowns mean that an actual deal is probably a longshot. But the Mets – and Yanks – are staying involved just in case.
