A Missoula resident’s business that employs people with disabilities is growing.

Katie Rolf, 34, was born blind. “But that didn’t stop my dreams,” Rolf said.

Just 15 years ago, while she was in high school, she founded what is now becoming a citywide dog treat business.

Katie’s Kookies offers three kinds of gourmet dog treats. “I bake herb and cheese, peanut butter and honey, and I bake the diet ones,” Rolf said.

They’re all natural with no preservatives. Rolf takes pride in adding a little heart in each bag.

More than just a business, it is giving other people like her an opportunity.

“It employs people with disabilities. It provides training opportunities for them so they can move on to the next step, which would be finding a job,” Opportunity Resources director of vocational services Kurt Mayne said.

Last year Opportunity Resources, a Montana nonprofit that serves people with disabilities, bought Rolf’s company.

Rolf is still hands-on, with the help of her grandmother and mother.

“I’m not letting other people do it for me, I depend on myself,” Rolf said.

She uses her disability as her ability to make a difference.
