Alice is a 1-year-old domestic short hair female. She is very petite in size but has a big heart to give love. Alice is a total lap kitty! It takes time for Alice to warm up but once you start petting her she doesn’t want you to stop. Alice loves pets so much that she will nudge your hand for you to keep going. She is currently being housed with other kitty roommates and she doesn’t mind it at all, she enjoys her kitty friends. Alice may hide when there is a lot going on in the room but if you sit down or watch her through the window you will notice that she is adventurous and curious. Dusty Bear is one of our super seniors. He is an 8 year old grey domestic short hair with a calm disposition. Some of his favorite things to do is relax in his cat tower, people watch out his window and chow down on kitty treats. Dusty Bear likes to be independent and doesn’t care much for sitting in laps. A calm place with plenty of windows to look out would be an ideal home for him. You can meet Dusty Bear at Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, located at 1687 West Stowell Road in Santa Maria on Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. www.smvhs.org/adopt-a-dog

Our trainers have nicknamed Harley the love slug. She is a smiley lady who takes her time on leash and is amazing for working with our more rambunctious dogs on their manners, as she takes everything in stride. She would rather sunbathe and get pets than worry about what other dogs are doing. She is a couch potato through and through! She likes her space, and would prefer to not be interrupted during her down time by loud or bouncy children or dogs. If you have a comfy couch, dog bed, or chair you wouldn’t mind letting her have in your home, she would be a very happy girl. A fenced yard would be great for Harley, as she could spend her life of leisure soaking in the sun. She had previous injuries to her ear and leg which can bother her from time to time, so she needs a human who will make sure they aren’t too rough with her, and respect that she might occasionally be a bit achy. You can meet Harley at Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, located at 1687 West Stowell Road in Santa Maria on Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. www.smvhs.org/adopt-a-dog
*Harley’s adoption fee has been paid for by a Guardian Angel. She also comes with free registration to a Bond with Your Dog obedience class and 6 months’ supply of Purina dog food.*

If you are looking for an active partner to go on walks, runs or hikes with you, come and meet Jazmine. She is a beauty with a true zest for life. Jazmine enjoys being out in the yard and running around playing. She is smart and would do best in a home where she has things to do which keep her challenged. So daily exercise is key. Jazmine gets along well with adults but is not a fan of children so she needs a home with older kids or adults only. If you have another dog, bring your friend to see if Jazmine is a good match. She may like a canine companion. Jazmine would love to find her forever home soon as she has been patiently waiting for a while. What a gentle giant. Beautiful, handsome, charming Kyser is a special guy who would love to have a second chance at happiness. You see, he did have a home but due to a change in lifestyle, his family had to bring him to the shelter. Even though he is a big dog, he is easy to walk and will nicely stroll by your side. He can be goofy too when he is in the mood for some fun. But more than anything, he is hoping a nice family falls in love and takes him home with them. If you have room in your heart for a big dog with a big heart, check him out. He has a silly side as well, and if you bring him home, he would love to show it to you. Nora is a sweet girl who likes to lean on you and gaze lovingly into your eyes. She gives good kisses and wants a home where she can feel safe. She has been working with our trainers on her leash manners as sometimes if she gets too excited or anxious, and she will forget herself and pull. Her progress has been astounding, and for a girl who a couple weeks ago was too worked up to be within 50ft of another dog, she is now relaxing and lying down at 8-10ft from calm dogs and paying attention to her human. Cream cheese is her FAVORITE, and makes her forget all her worries. If you are looking for a cozy companion with soft fur and a swooshy tail to spend your days and nights with, Nora is your girl! My name is Terry. I’m a little shy at first, but I warm up pretty quickly. I love to explore, play, and go on walks. I can execute the most perfect sit when offered a treat–would you like to see? Right now I don’t like seeing other dogs when I’m out and sometimes I pull really hard to get to them so I can tell them to go away – even from 50 yards away. The people here at the shelter are working with me to feel better about seeing dogs when out, but it’s still a work in progress. I would prefer leash walks in big open spaces where my people can keep me safe from other dogs. I do not like going to off leash dog parks. I have a lot of energy and would love to go to an active home. Could that home be yours? Tia is a special girl. She spent the first 4 years of her life mostly alone in a back yard and so missed out on a lot of socialization. She wants badly to be friends, but sometimes gets nervous. If you go slow and let her initiate the interactions, she’s quite cuddly and often will somersault into your lap. She loves to run and plays fetch. She LOVES water. She is extremely food motivated – so use this to your advantage when training as well as when helping her to feel safe with new people. She gets nervous when she has toys or food and thinks someone may be trying to take them from her. Please speak with our behavior manager for how to help her through this issue. Tyler is a handsome man who loves to give paw and sit for treats and petting. He is an active boy and would love a companion who can take him on walks and hikes. He is working on leash manners and coming along nicely! He would be happy to walk by another dog at a few feet away down the street, but at this point would rather not stop to say Hello. He is getting more comfortable with their presence, and with some more time and training will be a perfect gentleman. If you need a photogenic, stud muffin in your life to boost your Instagram following, Tyler would be happy to pose for you and give you all the love he has to share in return for his chance at the good life.
