For the rower Kat Copeland, 2012 was a year to remember: she not only won a gold medal at the London Olympics, but she also acquired a pug, called Doug, as a birthday present. In the six years since then, her pet has suffered a series of health problems: he has had eye surgery to remove scar tissue from an ulcer, an operation to help his breathing, and treatment for a slipped disc.
âIâm lucky because my mum and dad are vets and do a lot of his medical tests,â said Copeland, who won Olympic gold in the lightweight double sculls with Sophie Hosking. âBecause pugs can have so many health problems, he has still been really expensive.â
Dougâs treatments have cost ÂŁ3,800 in total;âŚ
