Hilary Lister sailed into the record books on August 23, 2005, when she successfully crossed the Channel alone; four years later she completed the journey around the coastline of Britain. Yet what made these achievements even more remarkable was that Lister, a quadriplegic whose degenerative condition had put her in a wheelchair from the age of 15, piloted her yacht by blowing and sucking on two plastic straws.

“I think she’s absolutely barking mad,” declared her husband, Clifford, when she set off from Dover on her Channel crossing with the sun glistening brightly on the sea. “But I’m very pleased she’s doing it.”
