Bay Area Veterinarians Lead Spay/Neutering of 400 Dogs in China to Save From Dog Meat Industry

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Duo Duo Project, a leader of ending the dog meat trade has a big mission — end people eating dogs around the world and shutter for good the slaughterhouses that supply the dog meat. “Our focus is educating communities on the far-reaching health and social benefits of eliminating dogs from their eating habits. We know the long-term solution for ending the trade is reducing the ‘demand’ for dog meat,” says Paul Fong, director of international policies, Duo Duo Project. But Fong goes on the explain that to permanently shutter the slaughterhouses, the ‘supply’ side of the highly criminalized enterprise also needs to be addressed. “Large scale spay/neutering programs, like the one we brought to DaLian, put a serious pinch on the available dogs at-risk for being captured, sold and killed in slaughterhouses that supply the trade.”

On September 15, 2018, Duo Duo sponsored the training of 30 veterinarians and vet techs from the DaLian area on quicker and minimally invasive spay/neutering techniques thought to be less painful to dogs. The session was led by US veterinarians, Dr. Amy Land and her vet technician, Christina Leno from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) and Dr. Monica Rudiger, DVM, and founder of Nine Lives Foundation in Redwood City, CA. Timelier spay and neutering techniques means more dogs can have the procedure. The training program will result in close to 400 stray dogs being neutered or spayed at the project’s participating shelter. “We couldn’t be happier at how well the training went and the enthusiasm the DaLian vets showed for training even more veterinarians,” Fong says.  As more vets learn the procedure, the impact to disrupt supply is unlimited.

Duo Duo partnered with several animal care organizations including spcaLA, DaLian, the Ruipeng Pet Healthcare Group Co. Ltd and Dalian Small Animal Veterinarian Association provided planning and logistical support. Learn more at
