Austin Monthly is proud to announce a partnership with Austin Pets Alive! to help rescued animals get adopted. Each week we’ll be showcasing a different cat or dog with information provided by the nonprofit, so you can get acquainted with the adorable canine or feline before you decide to bring the pet home with you.
Sebastian was rescued from Houston during Hurricane Harvey, then traveled all the way to Austin. Through it all, he kept a smile on his face and his sweet spirit intact!
Still a young dog at 3 years, Sebastian is really hitting his stride. He’s a very social guy who is great at meeting new people, loves being pet, and starts revealing his wiggly side when you show him some affection. Sebastian has also perfected the art of procuring treats from unwitting volunteers and staff all over APA!. He’d give up the treat game in a heartbeat for the right home, though. He just asks that you keep some sturdy chew toys around the house because they are his favorite!
Sebastian enjoys going on adventures, riding in the car, taking long walks, but also just being a couch potato and chilling with his person. He has a very sweet and playful demeanor but has matured enough to listen quite well to directions and walk nicely on leash. He is also getting very good at fetch, tug of war, coming when called, relaxing in his crate, and giving on-demand kisses! Sebastian has a ton of spunk and is eager learn whatever tricks you have up your sleeve, especially if treats are involved.Â
Sebastian is such a smart pup that he’s part of APA!’s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Sebastian has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help him learn the skills to become the best dog he can be! Sebastian is learning skills like sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told “free,” and coming when called.
Once Sebastian successfully completes all the skills on his training plan he will be considered TOP Dog Ready! As part of APA!’s Total Obedience Program you can work with APA! staff to continue to build a training relationship with Sebastian after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together. Check out a video on APA!’s CGC program, on which the TOP was based.Â
