A love for order and detail leads to work at military museum

When Linda Apodaca was hired as the archivist, librarian and exhibition designer for the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum two years ago, it was a great fit for her.

“I am very patriotic and although I have never served, I love the military. I like the structure, order and discipline that goes with the military,” she says. “My son is an officer in the military, most of the employees and volunteers I work with are retired military. … I enjoy the camaraderie and respect they share with one another, even after they retire.”

The museum is a Marine Corps command museum at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, with exhibits and artifacts about the history of aviation in this branch of the military. One of the most recent exhibits Apodaca has worked on is the museum’s “Military Working Dogs” exhibit, which is on display through June 30.

Apodaca, 58, who lives in Spring Valley with her husband Chris and has two sons, took some time to talk about the exhibit, some of the history of this program with dogs in the military, and how much she enjoys one particular hiking spot in her neighborhood.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

A: It’s something that has nothing to do with my job: Years ago, a little girl at my son’s school told me I was uptight. She told me I needed to go home and “dance like no one’s watching.” I guess she thought I needed to let loose. LOL!

Q: Describe your ideal San Diego weekend.

A: Having lunch at The Barbecue Pit where I used to eat with my grandparents, back in the day. And going to the San Diego Zoo, I love that place! I’ve been visiting the zoo since I was little. My dad helped build the Skyfari aerial tram when I was a kid and I remember visiting while he was on the job. My family has a long history in San Diego.
